Contribution and Giving
-
I recently watched the new Will Smith film ’7 Pounds’ – Wow! What an amazing film. I am a big film fan, and Will Smith fan in general, but I have to say that this film really blew me away.
Without giving away the brilliant ending, this is the general plot line:
“An IRS agent with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.”
And change their lives he does!!
At the moment I feel like I am going through a real need to change my circumstances in my life so this film deeply resonated with me, and got me thinking about the age old “Meaning of Life” question. It also reminded me of the Tony Robbins quote, “The secret to living is in giving.”
Obviously with Christmas just behind us, I invite you to all think about the difference between the gifts you received and the ones you gave. If you’re anything like me you were sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for your nearest and dearest to open their presents to see their reaction and hope they loved their gifts.
For me this is an amazing experience.
So as part of my own lifestyle designing process I am continually looking for ways to give more. My full time job is in the service industry as a Personal Trainer so I feel I am giving lots in this way, and 2009 is definitely my year for blogging and giving away as much free content as I possibly can.
I’m also toying with the suggestion of many self help experts that tithing of charitable (financial) donations are a great idea. Now, this one is hard because if I am totally honest I don’t have a lot to give – but I had a great idea!!
I thought long and hard that I wanted to give more, so I asked myself what I had to give away in the first place, and if you know me you won’t be surprised that I came up with the answer: my fitness and my health.
So, to cut a long story short I will be taking part in at least one charity event this year to raise money for good causes. I spoke to a good friend about this and he is going to join me in the task, and I think our first challenge is going to be a cycle from London to Paris.
To me, this is a part of my lifestyle design that gives me a sense of wellbeing from contributing and giving.
In what ways do you give charitably? I’d love to know…
I’ll keep you posted on my charity event progress.
