Organic Farming

  • I just thought I would check in since last night was the first of my Natural Nutrition presentations in Billericay. Thank you for those who came, I certainly enjoyed sharing myself with you.

At the class we spent the entire session talking about food quality, and the benefits of organically farmed food, versus commercially farmed food. I gave the statistic at one point that the person who eats a commercial food diet eats approximately 20kg (10lbs) of dry weight in pesticides each year – about 1 tbsp a day!! I always find this statistic shocking and am surprised that when people know this information they don’t switch to organic straight away. But there is a new, organic trend emerging, so this is a good sign.

However, with this statistic in mind I was questioned as to what the differences were between commercially farmed foods that you would buy in the supermarket and then buying local produce from a smaller farmer. So I went out today and did my research speaking to the local farmers at the farm shops here in Billericay and was told very confidently that unless it is labelled as organic, then it has been sprayed with chemical fertilisers, pesticides, etc.

I am guessing the local farmers don’t do this as much as the ones that have the contracts with the big supermarket chains, but my thought for you to ponder is – when are too many chemicals bad for you? I know the answer for myself, and I eat a strictly organic diet because of this. I hope that this guides you towards better decisions for your health and wellbeing.
