New Years Resolutions 2012 – Part 1
-
What Will You Do That is Different Next Year? In 2011 you either achieved your goals you set in 2010 and need different ones, or you didn’t achieve them and you need to do something differently to achieve them this year.
What are you hoping to achieve in 2012? The all-powerful New Years Resolutions – that for approximately 90% of people are gone by February!
To decide upon a goal that you desire to achieve is the first step to achieving it. Statistics show that if someone actually has a goal, then they are more likely to achieve than someone who doesn’t (seems pretty obvious.) But further, someone who writes down their goal, is EVEN MORE likely to achieve their goal than someone who has a goal but does not write it down.
There is a way to create your New Years Resolutions so that you are much more likely to achieve them and get better results than ever before. I suggest the following steps, and I help my clients to understand them, building a foundation for sensible gym work and healthy nutrition plans to build upon:
1. Write down your goals (no more than 3 in any given area of your life), and state it POSITIVELY! e.g. “My goal is to be fit, slim and healthy” as opposed to “I don’t want to be fat and ill any more.”
2. It should be PERSONAL (about you, not someone else)
3. It should be present-tense (almost as though you have achieved it already!!!) e.g. “I am a size 8-10″ not “I WANT to be a size 8-10.”
4. It should be a really exciting goal – something that makes you really want to do the work and make the changes in your life to get that goal.
5. It should ideally be measurable, although not always possible.
6. It should be realistic.
These steps will give you the best chances of achieving your goals in the long-term.
So if you came into 2011 with grand dreams and aspirations for your body but don’t feel you have quite got the rewards to match your effort then make the changes I suggest above and you can get different health and fitness results next year.
If you know me at all well you know that even though I am particularly un-phased by New Year itself (I’ll probably be in bed by 10.30pm) I do like to set myself some goals, and invariably I follow-through on them. This year is no different. Stay tuned next week and my next post will explain my BIG goals for the coming year. I am quite excited about them and maybe you will want to join me.
