Primal Workouts Explained

  • In the past two weeks I have been publishing my own ‘Primal Workouts’, and in coming weeks I will publish more and more.

My latest video is the Beach Primal Workout:

These two video’s have had a very positive response, with many people applauding me for helping to “Get people out of the gym and back into nature.” Of course, as with everything that seems to be “new” it has had it’s critics. In this blog post I wanted to explain to people exactly what my workouts are, and what they are not.

    My Primal Workouts are:

    1. Safe and effective exercise programmes, using gym-based programme design protocols to gain results for myself and my clients
    2. Scientificially designed according to the principles of programme design, corrective exercise, and biomechanics
    3. Based primarily outdoors because it is more fun, you can get some fresh air, get back in touch with nature, and there is a lot more variety in these workouts. However, these programmes can be done indoors according to the same principles
    4. Often random, almost exploratory, without a pre-determined destination or target. I like the flexible nature this brings to workouts and takes people out of their structured, Black-berry and iPhone-driven lifestyles
    5. Catered to the level of the participant
    6. Based around compound movements that mimic many of the natural movements seen in nature, I.e. squatting, lunging, bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, and gait
    7. A compendium of my nearly 10 years in the fitness and health industry, all practiced and learnt thoroughly by me with literally hundreds of thousands of hours of theoretical education and practical experience.

    My Primal Workouts are not:

    1. An attempt to copy Parkour/Free-Running or Methode Naturelle
    2. Hardcore, boot-camp style workouts designed to punish people and make them hurt as much as possible
    3. One-size fits all, and each person is assessed before their workout for optimal movement patterns, length-tension relationships in their muscles, and stress levels, to determine the best exercises for them
    4. Designed to turn you into an outdoor living expert/guru but simply to swap your normal gym routine, for a more efficient outdoor workout
    5. “Natural Fitness” sessions. They are normal fitness sessions that are performed in nature. Will they help you if you were ever stuck in nature? I like to think so, but this cannot be promised!

So, now you know what these workouts are and are not I hope it inspires you to believe that you can do these workouts  yourself. Someone commented to me after watching my video they thought that I had “lost the plot” – surely by doing these workouts in nature where we all sprung from I have actually “re-found the plot”.

    What do you think?
