Time Management
-
When it comes to Lifestyle Design, time is your hottest commodity. Time is a non-renewable resource and it’s often said that it’s “the only thing you can never get back.”
Most people look into the concept of lifestyle design (even though we all design lifestyles whether consciously or unconsciously) in order to get more time in their lives. It is often to make more money, but it’s mostly to increase their time – as long as they have ENOUGH money of course. (More on that in later posts!)
I recently finished watching a very extensive and entertaining lecture on Time Management by Professor Randy Pausch.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lecture (I’ve actually watched it multiple times in the last two days) and thought I would suggest it as essential viewing for everyone.
Some of the information I had heard before and it was nice to revisit it, and some of it was new and refreshing.
I took home 4 key points which I would like to discuss briefly now. I am sure you will perceive it differently to me however so please let me know what you saw and I didn’t.
- The purpose of life is to have fun. If it’s not fun don’t do it! This includes “work” – of course if it was fun we wouldn’t call it “work” would we in the first place! Find fun in everything you do and if you can’t, then quit! (Disclaimer: I am not telling you to quit your job, just merely noting the insanity and continuing to do something that makes you unhappy!)
- Do the right things, rather than doing things right. This might seem alien to most people, but Randy Pausch refers to Lou Holt (who created 100 things to do before he died) who said, “If at any time I wasn’t working towards one of these 100 things, WHY?!” Or similarly Pausch says, “There’s no point in polishing the underside of the banister!”
- The talk goes on to quote Walt Disney, whom I hope to echo with the message of this website: “If you can dream it, you can do it!” I belie ve so strongly in this, that I suggest you go out and dream BIG!
- And lastly above all else, you should always prioritise eating, sleeping and exercise – with sleep as a priority Pausch says. This is very much the message of my work. If you don’t have your health – of which eating, exercise and sleeping are three of the main factors – then there is no point in having anything else.
So, there you have it. That is what I took from the lecture and will be taking all four points seriously in my life from now.
