What Nutrition Means To Me

  • I’ve just returned from my weekly ‘hunt-and-gather’ (or food shopping as we civilised people call it). My typical routine of purchasing mine and my wife’s sustenance involves 4 or 5 different places to buy my organic meats and vegetables from, another for the free range eggs that we eat, and sometimes a couple of others that we cannot get any of the aforementioned from. This is obviously more time-consuming than quickly driving round the corner to the supermarket and getting some ‘fast-food’. It’s also more expensive and takes slightly more time when it comes to preparation, but as I always say, “It’s obviously going to take more time than just unwrapping some junk food.”

But the results are totally worth it. And besides, it’s all about choice. I used to be very judgemental about people and what they are eating, and I’d stare with disgust at a person’s shopping trolley full of ‘crap’, but then I realised that life is all about choice. And even more importantly, this is the same ‘crap’ diet that I used to have myself! Ask any of my friends and they will testify that I was certainly a fast-food King for a while. So my judgement of people and their less than perfect diets has now turned into compassion for them not knowing any better. And I wish them the power to choose for themselves.

I invite everyone in this coming week alone to make your own choices and not listen to television adverts, or what your parents told you to do, or what your friends say about nutrition. Ask one question: “Does this choice I am about to make, give me the identity that I want?” Are you going to be known for your love of fast-food like I was, or are you going to be known as someone who cares for their health. It’s all about choice. Neither is better of worse, but one choice will serve you in your goals in life (talked about in my previous blog post), and one choice will have less desirable effects.

Nutrition is easy. Just be aware and your body will tell you (show you!) what is right for it. Since ditching the junk-food and eating only organic foods, my energy is super-charged and I can’t wait until my next meal!
